Rainbow Sharks (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum) are eye-catching freshwater fish with a jet-black body and bright red tail and fins. Their sleek torpedo shape and energetic swimming style make them a favorite for aquarists wanting an active and colorful bottom dweller. Adults grow up to 5–6 inches in length.

Tank Setup:

A minimum tank size of 40 gallons is recommended due to their territorial nature and activity level. Provide a long tank with hiding places such as rocks, caves, and driftwood. Sand or smooth gravel substrate works well. Avoid overcrowding and aggressive tank mates.

• Best kept alone or with fast-swimming mid- and top-level fish.
• Avoid similar-looking species (e.g., red tail shark, black shark) to prevent fights.

Feeding: Rainbow Sharks are omnivores that eat algae, sinking pellets, wafers, bloodworms, and blanched vegetables. A balanced mix of protein and plant matter keeps their coloration bright and immune system strong.

Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely rare and difficult. Most Rainbow Sharks in the hobby are farm-raised and not typically bred in standard tank conditions. They exhibit territorial behavior when mature.

Compatibility:

Semi-aggressive—not suitable for peaceful nano tanks. Compatible with robust fish like Gouramis, Barbs, larger Tetras, and Plecos. Avoid housing with other bottom dwellers unless the tank is large and well-decorated to reduce aggression.
